Scope:

The goal of this article is to present a process for liberal arts computer science programs to incorporate CS202X into a curricular review or revision at their institution. This process will guide programs to consider CS202X by first reflecting on their institutional mission and local programmatic priorities and values. Instead of presenting a template model curriculum, the process will guide departments through defining their identity as a computer science program. This may result in programs with different essentials and specializations aligned with their opportunities and strengths. Programs will articulate curricular design principles based on this work to guide the implementation process.

The process will be designed to support the development of a new program, review of a program for assessment or accreditation, or incremental updates of an existing program to address specific challenges. CS202X will serve as a framework for this process, but may not dictate the full shape of the resulting curriculum. The article will give a brief survey of the liberal arts computing education philosophy, its challenges and opportunities, and commonly seen curricular initiatives within this philosophy, referencing the literature. The proposed process will be grounded in a literature review of curriculum design and survey evidence from the liberal arts computing education community. The process will go through review and iterative design and supplemental materials will be shared illustrating how sample institutions have engaged with the process.
